From space, our planet’s atmosphere, land, and water can be monitored for multiple application fields. This is where the European Earth observation programme Copernicus comes in. To date, however, Copernicus services and data have not been officially released via formats or tools popular among mobile developers, nor have they been offered as linked open data. Offering intuitive tools the community can use to link its own information to Copernicus data will make Copernicus an increasingly essential node in the web of data, which means it will see more exposure and usage by the crowd without the need for additional investment.
The Copernicus App Lab wants to foster new business opportunities by providing Earth observation data in a format that makes the data searchable and easily accessible to new potential downstream service providers.

The App Lab is inviting developers to join a beta testing period from 12 April to 30 May 2018. It will challenge mobile developers to work with and test the tools already established, provide feedback, and even come up with new and innovative applications using Earth observation data. Participants in the beta phase will have access to sample datasets, analytics and tools, which enables developers to build, extend, and run applications with semantically enriched Earth observation data. Experience in integrating such data is not required to participate in the beta testing; developers will get all the support and information they need.

Please note that this is a research project, aiming only at establishing a proof-of-concept (TRL 6).

BENEFITS

Why is the App Lab platform the ideal development environment for your next mobile application?

  • This is your chance to augment Copernicus data with a broad range of cross-domain datasets through advanced data access protocols.
  • Advanced analytics are also available to help you combine sets of linked data, answer advanced questions, and generate information for your application.
  • Semantically enhanced metadata makes it easy to locate the exact data you need.
  • Prototyping is much faster thanks to the option to reuse area-specific expertise based on corresponding ontologies.
  • It’s easier to collaborate with experts in certain areas with web semantics providing a framework for acknowledging the contributions of others.

BUILD YOUR OWN APP

Think you’ve got what it takes? Then get started on your own app!

Approach without Copernicus App Lab Tools

  • Download all datasets from their respective repositories
  • Understand the data
  • Make conversions to comply with standards
  • Align data from different datasets to be able to combine the information (interlinking process)
  • Store the transformed data using a new model
  • Consume data
  • Analyse data
  • Visualisation

Approach with OPeNDAP only

  • View metadata to understand the data
  • Consume data
  • Make conversions to comply with standards
  • Align data from different datasets to be able to combine the information (interlinking process)
  • Analyse data
  • Visualisation

Approach with all Copernicus App Lab Tools
